What a DA Score Can—and Cannot—Tell Creative Businesses

Artists and creative businesses often depend on online discovery as much as word of mouth. A studio might seek coverage on design blogs, while an illustrator may pitch a guest article to a publication read by potential clients. When reviewing websites for these opportunities, marketers commonly encounter a da score. It can offer a quick point of comparison, but it is only useful when understood alongside other signs of a site’s value.

    What a DA Score Measures

Domain Authority, usually shortened to DA, is a metric developed by Moz to estimate how likely a website is to rank in search results compared with other sites. It uses link-related signals, including the number and quality of backlinks pointing to a domain. The score runs from 1 to 100, with higher numbers generally suggesting a stronger link profile.

DA is not a direct Google ranking factor, nor does it promise that a page will appear in a particular position. It is best treated as a comparative indicator: a way to help assess one website against another, rather than a verdict on a site’s quality. A closer explanation of what a DA score measures can help make that distinction clear.

    Why the Number Can Change

A DA score may rise or fall as Moz updates its model, discovers new links, or removes links that are no longer available. Other websites are changing too, so a domain’s relative position can shift even if its own content and links have not changed much. These movements do not automatically mean a site has improved or suffered a search penalty.

For creative professionals, this matters when tracking the value of press mentions, collaborations, or links earned from project features. A change in the number is a prompt to review the wider picture, not a reason to abandon a publishing relationship that reaches the right audience.

DA, DR, and Authority Score Are Different

Other SEO platforms provide their own measures of website strength. Ahrefs Domain Rating, or DR, is based mainly on the strength of a domain’s backlink profile. Semrush Authority Score combines link data with additional signals, such as estimated organic traffic and signs of spam. Each tool uses its own data and calculation, so scores from different platforms are not interchangeable.

A website might have a relatively high score in one tool and a lower one in another. That difference is not necessarily an error; the platforms may find different links or weigh signals differently. When comparing possible guest-posting sites, use the same metric consistently where possible, and remember what the chosen metric actually measures.

Look Beyond the Score Before You Pitch

A high DA alone does not make a site a good partner. A useful publication should reach readers who might care about the artist’s work, services, or expertise. Check whether its articles are original, current, and relevant, and whether its audience appears genuine. A smaller site with a focused readership may be more valuable than a much larger site whose subject matter has little connection to your work.

Review traffic estimates and the quality of the site’s backlinks as well. Look for signs that its content attracts visitors naturally, and check whether the links pointing to it come from relevant, credible sources. Consider the page where a guest article would appear: a domain-level score cannot tell you whether that particular page will be prominent, useful, or seen by the right people.

For a working artist, the best opportunity may be a thoughtful feature in a local arts publication or a specialist design blog. For a creative agency, it might be an industry resource that brings qualified inquiries. In both cases, audience fit and editorial quality should come before chasing a bigger number.

Build Visibility on More Than One Front

Link building is only one part of being discoverable online. Clear service descriptions, a current portfolio, useful articles, and accurate business details all help potential clients understand what you offer. Freelancers can also make their location visible when it is relevant to the work they seek. On Osdire, for example, sellers across creative and business categories can add a city and country to their profiles, helping buyers find talent through location-based searches. These freelancer profile update steps are a practical complement to broader efforts to improve online visibility.

Use Metrics as a Guide, Not a Goal

DA can help narrow a list of websites for outreach, compare potential placements, or track broad changes in a domain’s link profile. It cannot tell you whether a site’s readers are a good fit, whether its content is trustworthy, or whether a guest post will lead to meaningful attention. Pair it with traffic, relevance, backlink quality, and a careful review of the site itself.

For creative businesses, a strong online presence grows through consistent, relevant work: publishing useful material, choosing appropriate collaborators, and making it easy for the right people to find you. A da score can inform those decisions, but the value of an opportunity ultimately depends on the people it reaches and the credibility it helps build.
